AUBURN, M.E. – The Elmira Aviators (19-25-5-4) were shut out 3-0 by the Maine Nordiques (30-20-2-2) at Norway Savings Bank Arena Friday night.
Elmira dominated territorially and in the shot department, especially in the second and third periods, but the Maine goaltender Lukas Fursten had every answer.
The Nordiques built out a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from William-Francisco Parent and a last-minute strike from Joe Gasperko. Maine did well to convert on the few chances they created.
The Aviators dominated shots, 16-9, in the second frame and began to tilt the game in their favor. However, Fursten continued to make stellar save after stellar save.
One moment that stood out was a Corson Maguire one-time shot from in tight. Not only did Fursten do exceptionally well to get across the crease, but he also shoulder shrugged to stop the rising puck.
Elmira kept coming in the third, outshooting Maine 12-2 in the final period, but Fursten continued to stop everything. Even when Fursten turned the puck over away from his net, he dived back in to make another spectacular stop.
The Nordiques sealed the victory with their third goal with just over four minutes left in the third period. Michael Sandruck and Aiden Farro got out on the rush with Farro burying the chance.
Overall, the Aviators played a strong hockey game, but sometimes a goalie can steal a win, and Fursten stole a victory for the Nordiques Friday night.
Elmira will go for the series split back at Norway Savings Bank Arena at 7 p.m. against the Nordiques. Fans can stream the contest on NATV or listen live on WINGZ93.
